Daniel was born January 18, 1856. He was the fifth of eight children. His father was a Barber and his mother was a stay at home mom who cleaned and cared for the children. When Daniel was nine his father died. This forced his mom to move with their relatives because they were really poor.
At age 15, Daniel became a Barber. Daniel is famous for performing the first open heart surgery on a man named James Cornish. He was the first African-American to perform a successful open heart surgery. He learned about open heart surgery by reading and being interested in the veins and how they worked.
Daniel is credited with many successful surgeries.
